Her popularity is due to the fact that she had starred in Whedon's new TV show, Firefly. Summer Glau played River Tam without difficulty. Glau was an excellent actor. As Tam her character, she was forced into government experiments that required her to be prepared to become the perfect assassin. Tam had difficulty learning to manage her emotions as a result. Glau demonstrated her fighting ability as well as her acting abilities in Firefly. Being learning to be an assassin allowed Glau to make the most of her athletic abilities.
