Her popularity is due to the fact that she had starred in Whedon's new TV show, Firefly. Summer Glau played River Tam without difficulty. Glau was an excellent actor. As Tam her character, she was forced into government experiments that required her to be prepared to become the perfect assassin. Tam had difficulty learning to manage her emotions as a result.
